An SR-22 is a document that goes on file with the state of Colorado proving that you have certain auto insurance limits. It is sometimes referred to as a “Financial Responsibility Certificate”.

Do You Need an SR-22 in Colorado?

If you need an SR-22 you should have received notification through a court order or some other communication from the state that is requesting it. It may be required if you were caught driving without proper insurance or a valid driver’s license.

You may also be required to have an SR-22 in Colorado for the following reasons:

  • You’ve had a DUI or DWI
  • You’ve had numerous tickets or violations
  • You have a hardship license
  • You’ve had a lot of at-fault accidents

Where Can You Get an SR-22 in Colorado?

If you are required to have an SR-22, you must get it from your insurance company. If you already have an auto insurance policy, tell your company you need an SR-22, so they can attach it to your policy and file it for you.

If you don’t have an active auto policy and are in the process of purchasing one, tell the company you’re getting a quote from that you need an SR-22. Not all auto insurance companies can provide one, so it’s best to tell them you need it right away.

Is an SR-22 Expensive?

An SR-22 usually costs around $25 to file. Your insurance company will tack that on to your policy payment. However, many insurance companies will charge you higher insurance rates if you need an SR-22 because they see you as a high-risk driver.

So, while the SR-22 filing isn’t very costly, your insurance policy can be. Shop around to get the best rate if you need a policy with an SR-22.

How do I Get Rid of an SR-22 in Colorado?

The state will let you know how long you must keep an SR-22. It is typically three years. But, the important thing to remember is it won’t come off automatically. When your SR-22 is no longer required, you must notify your insurance company, so they can remove it for you.

What Happens if My Insurance Cancels?

If you have an SR-22 and your insurance policy cancels or lapses, the insurance company notifies the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and your license becomes suspended or revoked.
